When Lord’s Mountain Orphanage was closed in 2020, kids were dispersed to various family members across the region, while Pastor Bernard Lumene, who founded the orphanage, was transferred to Lusaka. That’s when the Lord’s Mountain Orphanage Education Foundation was formed, to ensure the continuous education of the kids. There is no way the foundation could have been successful without the talents and commitment of one local man: Mr. Mende Majomba, who lives in Zambezi. He was the orphanage’s business manager, and since its closure, he has served as the on-the-ground force responsible for managing finances, ensuring each child is looked after, and communicating any problems or issues to the Board.
One of the students, Lydia, who is currently studying public health nursing at Eden University in Lusaka (and an aspiring journalist to boot), recently interviewed Dad Mende to get the inside scoop on his life and important work in Zambezi.
Mr. Mende has a deep dedication to the Lord's Mountain Orphanage. As a caretaker over the past 15 years, his responsibilities cover crucial aspects like managing finances sent from the sponsors, ensuring school fees are paid, procuring supplies and groceries, and serving as a liaison between the children and their teachers. He interacts with teachers to discuss the children's progress and performance, demonstrating his genuine interest in supporting their academic and personal development. He has found great fulfilment in advising the children to prioritize their education, knowing it will put them on a path to a better life." While Mr. Mende faces some challenges, such as the difficulty of traveling long distances to the various schools where children are enrolled, his commitment shines through.
"The biggest joy I have is being able to advise our children to concentrate on their education,” Mr. Mende says, his voice brimming with pride. "I want them to have a better life.
He admits life is not always easy for him. He is married with five children—two boys and three girls. Life in Zambezi has grown increasingly challenging, with the country facing a devastating drought and the prices of essential commodities soaring. "Life is very hard for me, but the joy I have is that I am always with God, the provider of everything," Mr. Mende reflects.
Despite the hardships, Mr. Mende remains steadfast in this role, driven by his faith and desires to make a positive impact on the children's life. He dreams of one day visiting the United States to meet the sponsors.
“I am grateful for the loving and caring almighty hearts of the sponsors,” he says. “I pray that almighty God blesses them highly for their support of the children of Lord’s Mountain Orphanage.”
